Could it be that they were tortured not for the whereabouts of LV,
but instead for the wording of the entire prophecy??

Suppose the Longbottoms know two things-- the full text of the
prophecy, and the identity of yet another traitor within the order.
Voldemort doesn't want them killed, because there's still a
chance he may be able to get the prophecy information out of
them, but he doesn't want them to recover either, because they'll
expose his spy. Hmmm, I wonder if Lupin had to visit St Mungo's
every month when he was in the dangerous phase of his moon
cycle, and also goes there now to get his wolfsbane.
