Seriously, can you back this up? This is very new to me, and
extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof

<Atropos G.> Random, this theory is quite old, and not my original
work. Credit goes to the Ultimate Unofficial Guide to the Mysteries
of Harry Potter book. The theory: Probably because they had doubts
about Black (the supposed Secret Keeper for the Fidelius Charm) there
are speculations that the back up precaution was for James and Remus
to switch identiites using a Switching Spell. This was probably done
in secret by Lily and kept secret from even Dumbledore. Voldemort
attacked and Lupin (looking like James) was killed. James was now
stuck inside Remus' body. So, as Lupin, James is safe (for the
moment) from Voldemort who thinks he's dead.
Now the documentation. Some is clearly inference, and speculation
based on interviews and our interpretation of the reading, but there
is canon, too, which they claim supports it:
1. JKR has dropped hints in numerous interviews, etc. that there is
something very special about Lupin; when asked her favorite character-
she also replies that she loves Remus Lupin, she also said that it
was Lupin who made Book 3, POA critical for her to write.
2. Book 1 (SS) evidence -It would certainly explain how Dumbledore
got Jame's Invisibility Cloak, and Hagrid the Potter's Gringott's
vault key-Remus/James gave the items to them. I know not very
strong, but here come the ZINGERS.
Book 3 evidence:
1. Chap 5 Lupin does not stare at Harry's scar, mention his
resemblance to James or how he has Lily's eye (like everyone else
does upon meeting him); and Lupin addresses Harry by his first name,
as if he is already knows him well.
2. Chap 8 - Lupin seems to be able to read Harry's mind-from book 1-
book 4, JKR's pattern has been that when characters appear to "read"
minds of each other, they have a close relationship or an "inside"
track.
3. Chap 10-Harry tells Lupin he hears his mother being murdered when
Dementors are near-Lupin made " a sudden motion with his arm as
though to grip Harry's shoulder, but thought better of it." As
Lupin, there is no rational reason why he should not grab his arm, so
the speculation is as James he is affected by this news and trying to
control himself.
4. Chap 11-Trelawney says Lupin "positively fled when I offerred to
crystal gaze for him". Now, Snape, Dd, and presumably some other
staff, as well as Hermione know he is a werewolf so could he be
hiding more than that?
5. Chap 12- First JKR is really into numerology and she always tells
us key items in Chaps 12 and 13 of her books. Harry says his
mother's voice is getting louder and Lupin looks "paler than usual".
Harry also says he hears his father for the first time. "You heard
James?" said Lupin in a strange voice.
6. Chap 13-Lupin-"shaken and pleased" congratulates Harry on his
spectacular Patronus-we suspect "shaken" because the unusual form of
his Patronus is a stag-James animagus form
7. Chap 17- the door bursts open in a "shower of red sparks" Lupin
enters his wand ready. Recall Harry's wand at Olivander's it
showered red and gold sparks-some say Lupin/James is a "true"
Gryffindor which is why we see red sparks
8. Chap 17 - "...and I certainly don't want Harry dead..." as an odd
shiver passed across his face. (more than just a teacher's dread)
9. Chap 18- "well highly exciting possibilities were open to us now
that WE could all transform"-as Lupin he should have said THEY could
all transform (after all he had been transforming all along), but
caught up in retelling the story he says *WE* because he is James and
referring to Peter, Sirius and himself.
10. Chap 18 Lupin has "no hesitation" about what James would think
or say-how can he be so sure
11. Lupin's first name is Remus- In the legend of Romulus and Remus,
Remus was killed by his brother or his brother's followers (such as
Peter, DEs or Voldemort)
So, there you have it-James is trapped in Remus' body, lived there
for 12 years hiding from Voldemort's followers (remember what they
did to the Longbottoms) and now that V. is back cannot reveal his
identity. Yet, his emotions occasionally make him weak and he slips
up. He so badly wants to touch his son, but can't. In order to
protect his son, he becomes the best DADA teacher Harry has had and
even teaches him magic beyond the OWL level.
That's it-what do you think?
