So, she's lying to Vernon when he says, "How did you know that?" and
she says, "I heard that awful boy telling HER"?

OK, I can imagine Petunia lying to Vernon to keep the peace. Not sure
I want to agree with the theory, but I can see her lying.

> Maybe Lily is the first witch in a long line of squibs which is

>unthinking of the psychological trauma for poor Petunia.

LOL... I feel so torn. I've got a group of folks telling me that what
happened to Hermione is just part of British school life and buck up
and get over it! And don't be scarred by it!

Now I hear "poor Petunia had to watch her sister buy supplies" which
presumably, is why she hates magic.

Not trying to single anyone out in particular. Just commenting on how
amusing it is.

Again, this is still lying to Vernon.

>Maybe the sisters ran into James & crew in The Leaky Cauldron. Maybe
James immediately recognizes the skanky annoying sister from Lily's
conversation and starts ragging on her, being perfectly awful.

Now, this I could buy. I could buy James giving her a good old
fashioned ghost story. SOMETHING made her remember the name "Azkaban"
and fear is as good as any reason.

> I also believe that Vernon (and most of Britain) is perfectly aware

Well, Vernon is aware it exists, but he makes references to being
surprised at the inner-workings of it, such as that there is a
Ministry.

Most of Britain? No, I can't agree. If most of Britain knew, there
would be pressure on Fudge to have witches and wizards put charms on
Britains tanks and curses on their enemies' tanks. Put it this way,
Hong Kong, India, South Africa, and all the other lost colonies
wouldn't have been lost...

>He knows about Petunia, but made her swear to cut off all ties with
>the WW. She probably had to do a lot of weeping and gnashing of
teeth to get him to accept Harry, and she only did it because of
whatever Dumbledore said to her.
>

I still think Dumbledore, with the note, left an account number at
Gringotts for a lot of Galleons and Vernon has been hoarding it.

He'll be punished.
