> In post 56254 I compared HP to the "Alchemical Wedding of Christian Rosencreutz", published in 1616. William Truderung was kind enough to reply in great detail and he gave a website where the AW can be read in modern English. [...] How JK Rowling will turn this into a gripping story is beyond my wildest imagination. But not hers, I'm sure. My prediction is that Harry's death will fill us all with tears - not tears of grief but tears of joy.
Susan Smith:
JKR is a well read woman-but do we know if she has read or studied the "Alchemical Wedding of Christian Rosencreutz"? If she has not, than does your theory still stand? It is a beautiful, spiritulal theory by the way. However, it is way above the head of most youth-and JKR has said, time after time she writes for children. She has even said she considers her audience to be 8-9 y.o.s. Given that, this theory would be incredible and not likely.
Hans now:
Many thanks for your response and your compliments.
Yes, if JK Rowling has not read the AW my theory still stands. Actually I doubt if she has. My theory is that she was inspired by "The Order of the Phoenix" (only joking). By that I mean the very people that Harry will join when he is liberated. These are the Masters of Compassion that grieve intensely for the suffering of humanity all over the world. They are the gate keepers who constantly keep the door of liberation open for those seeking freedom.
If you recall, in several interviews JK Rowling has admitted she was inspired. Harry walked into her life fully formed, scar and all, and all she had to do is ask questions in her mind.
My theory is that the AW was inspired in exactly the same way. As was the New Testament, the epic of Gilgamesh, the legend of King Arthur, the Tao Teh Ching, etc.
JK Rowling may very well say HP was written for children. Two things to say on that.
(1) OOP written for 8-9 year olds? The vocabulary is totally adult. The main story taken literally can certainly be understood by maybe 12 year olds upwards, but to penetrate the complexity, the many layers of meaning, the symbolism etc, I think you'd definitely have to be an adult. For each year of Harry's life the books go to a higher level. Book 7 will make War & Peace pale into insignificance!
(2) Certainly it could be said that the first four books were written for children, though I dispute that. However it is sure that children all over the world love them, and that's because children are so open to the archetypes that vibrate powerfully in HP. How can the Masters of Compassion influence humanity better than through the children, who are so open to these things? Yes, I could agree that the gate was opened to the children first, but the oldies will be holding their breath when book 7 comes out.
No, this septology was written for humanity. Get them hooked on freedom through the kids!
Actually I think JKR has that same sense of humour as is displayed in the AW. The AW describes the sacrifice of the newly liberated Master of Compassion as "punishment". JKR describes the most powerful message since the New Testament as "children's literature". Ha ha ha.
I wouldn't be surprised if HP becomes a world religion. Already some churches have had HP sermons and many theologians love HP. Someone is now writing a ballet about CoS. In the future people will write operas and oratorios, streets will be named after him and there will be a Harry Potter Day, as JKR foreshadowed in PS/SS. Here's a possible scenario. Maybe a little exaggerated, but who can say?
In about 2000 years time, in the year 2003 HP, people will be disputing about whether HP really existed. "There is no historical evidence for his existence", they will say. But of course there will be numerous holy relics. Enough bones to put together twelve Harry Potters. There will be no copies of the original books left and the oldest book will be one that was printed about 300 years after Harry Potter was supposed to have lived. However there will be certain, um, "adaptations" shall we call them, to the text, because, well, the texts didn't quite fit in with the opinions of the School Fathers, did they?
Schools will have the symbol of the lightning bolt on their towers and this symbol will be both hated and loved by millions.
There will be a bloody history of persecution and inquisition, because those who didn't quite stick to the doctrine had to be "corrected", didn't they? For their own good, of course. But that's all forgotten and forgiven now, in 2003 HP, because the Holy Dumbledad has apologised.
The Holy Dumbledad in Amor (a city of the future) will bewail the fact that so many people are leaving the Mother School. Meanwhile young people are leaving the Schools because they reckon it's fossilized and decaying. They're fed up with being edified by the boring exploits of St Potter.
They're more interested in this new author who's writing an epic about a boy called ...
