Considering the skills required of an auror, I wouldn't be surprised
ir we find some of them among the aurors. Or would this be too much
considering we already have Tonks?

I have noticed, I think Dumbledore noticed too. He made Lupin a
prefect hoping it would have a calming effect on j/s/p, so I think
it must have always been a personality trait. I think there might be
several reasons for this all of which have to do with him being a
werewolf.
1) He release all his rage and excitement when he is in werewolf
form. j/s/p became unregistered animagi to keep him company and
chaperone him during his changes. He is potrayed as a dangerous
creature when transformed (his imprisonment in the Shrieking Shack
and the rumors his violent presence cause that it is haunted.)
2) Because of those who know what he is, or might find out, he is
anxious to present a very calm presence to anyone who might be
frightened of him as a person.
3) He has learned a lot of life lessons, especially, I would think,
loneliness, the hard way. We have seen, in GoF & OoP especially,
fairly strong wizardly prejudice towards magical types that are
not "pure" human (and not just from Umbridge and Fudge). He may just
be tired.
