Sirius poor? Was "James Potter's profession?"

Well, he was able to buy Harry a very expensive broomstick. From 
this clue, I have always thought that Sirius was one of the "haves" 
in the wizarding world. It would almost have to be inherited money 
because he has spent most of his time in Azkaban or on the run. I 
don't know though. James and Lilly seemed to have amassed a fair 
amount in not a lot of time. Maybe inherited as well.
