I stick with my original belief - what I am thinking here is that 
this incident is not unlike Neville's first experience of flying.  I 
think it sensed his fear indeed.  I don't think he bucked the broom 
or anyone else did it either - the broom bucked itself.

Incidentally, it occurs to me that there are repeated parrallels in 
the experience of many of the kids in the books - its like a lot of 
them have a great deal in common without ever knowing it:

Riddle - Harry: Orphans

Snape - Draco: Lousy parents

Neville - Snape: lacking in confidence.

Hermione - Snape: Smart alecs and laughed at for it?

A Hogwarts therapy group might solve a load of problems.  Just a 
thought.
