Do we know if Petunia is older or younger than Lily?
Maybe they 
were "so thrilled to have a witch in the family"
becuase Petunia is 
older and she is a squib (I really like that idea) so
she wasn't 
really a witch but when they found out Lily was, then
Petunia was 
jealous ? Just another idea :)

Yes but aren't squibs rather rare?  I would think that
LIly was showing magical abilities far earlier than
her Hogwarts letter, her parents, being muggle-borns
did not realize this of course.  

I would think that if you were a magical family you
would assume the idea magical until proven otherwise. 
And I'm fairly certain that Petunia is older than
Lily...but not by much.  I'm just saying that because
it is definitely implied that Harry and Dudley were
born about the same time.  Of course that isn't saying
much but it makes sense..

~Melanie, who is fairly certain that Lily is a muggle
born and would be rather dissappointed if it turned
out she would not.  i think Harry being part muggle as
a lot to his character.
