Malfoy on the second floor

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why was Malfoy on the second 
floor on Halloween in CoS? When Harry, Ron, and Hermione discover the 
writting on the wall and the petrified Mrs. Norris, Malfoy is in the 
crowd that discovers them. But why was he there? It was after the 
feast, so shouldn't he have been headed for his common room, which is 
in the dungon. I thought that maybe Rowling put him there to make us 
suspicous, but we know that it wasn't him. But what other reason 
would he be there?

P.S. Hermione says early in CoS that Moaning Myrtle's bathroom is on 
the first floor, but it's really on the second. This may just have 
been a misprint.
