I'm just wondering why several posts have said that they
think; James and Lily would name Petunia as Harrys godmother. She has
never seen Harry until he turns up on her door step; where DD left him
(SS). It says she see's Harry and screams! (oh no I just had a
horrible thought, maybe she was reading the letter about her dead
sister and screams) (just looked it up on SS, it doesn't say that. it
says she opened the door to put out the milk bottles and screamed.)

But, James doesn't seem like the type to suffer fools gladly, and I 'm
sure he would see Petunia in just that light. Also, don't you have to
have some kind of ceremony to make someone a godparent? I *do* think
that Harry has a godmother, but maybe she is really another *he*.
*Lupin maybe*, who because he is a W-wolf, doesn't want to come
forward. Or maybe it was Alice Longbottom? They were in the OP
(first group) and Lily and her were pg at the same time... maybe Lily
was Nevilles godmother too. Sad thought.

Me -
I think Alice is more likely than Petunia but there could be a reason for
appointing Petunia. After all a godparent is often appointed as a legal
guardian if something happens to the parents (for example I had two
godmothers and one godfather, my mother's brother and his wife and one of my
father's sister with my parents will making my uncle and aunt my guardians
should they need to be). While making Sirius godfather is perfectly in
character he was a young, single male and I would expect that actually they
would have someone else (like Alice and frank) in mind as Harry's guardians
just because it would be easier for them than Sirius. If it was Alice and
frank that would explain why Sirius expects to be Harry's guardian in PoA -
after all Alice and frank are no longer in any position to be. But equally
while I don't in any way negate the neglect perpetrated by petunia she did
take Harry in (when she must have suspected there could be danger) she fed
and clothed him 9not well admittedly), saw to his education and gave him a
roof over his head - none of which she actually had to do. She could equally
well have claimed that she had no idea who Harry was and handed him over to
social services.
