Me:
Perhaps there was something about Harry's heritage that
Voldemort knew, but which JKR has not yet revealed to us, aside
from the similarities of both being orphaned, half-bloods, etc.
Possibly a blood relationship to Slytherrin or Gryffindor, as has
been discussed by lots of other folks?

Me:
Yes, I agree with the idea that "mark" may mean "to take notice
of", or as you say, "to make note of". From my first reading of the
OoP, that is how I read the prophesy: that Voldemort would
perceive/ observe/ take notice of Harry (presumably) as his
equal. I was surprised later when Dumbledore explained the
meaning of the prophesy to Harry, and referred to the physical
act of "marking", as in creating Harry's scar. I'm wondering
whether Dumbledore is making an error in his interpretation of
the prophesy, which is ambiguous at best. The expression, "he
will mark him as his equal", seems to me awkward English, if
the meaning is that the Dark Lord will "make a mark".
