I agree.  How would it help the plot?  

"Oh! Snape is gay! That explains..ermm....Well, it makes sense 
that...Umm...oh...k..."  

It would just seem very random. 

I have nothing against it, personally.  However, as others said there's the 
subject of controversy and over all plotlessness.  

Though...if a character did turn out to be gay, I wonder where it would come 
up?
