they're kids. Homosexuality is a mature issue and I'm not sure that

While I'm sure JKR has an eye on the international scene, in Britain we have popular 'kids' tv drama programs (aimed at the 11 - 15 year age) broadcast nationally between 4 to 5.30 pm that explore aspects of adolescent life, including gender/sexuality confusion, 'experimenting' and homosexuality. So, it wouldn't be an immediate no-no area.
