I too have just started another re-read of the series and a couple of
things from the 1st book jumped out at me as well. Three things that
were not on your list:
1) I completely forgot that Scabbers initially belonged to Percy.
This seems much more relevant to me now that Percy's loyalties are in
question from OoP. Sorry if this has been discussed too much already.
2) At the end of the feast after the sorting ceremony they all sing
the school song. Dumbledore ends the evening by saying: "Ah,
music," he said, wiping his eyes. "A magic beyond all we do here!
And now, bedtime. Off you trot." (pg 128 US version) Is this a
reference to some of that old magic that DD claims Voldemort
discounts or am I really reaching on this one?
3) When Harry and Voldemort are having their showdown at the end of
the book V talks about how much he values bravery (pg 294 US). I
know that Riddle was in Slytherin and a descendent of Salazar but
now, seeing how much emphasis has been placed on the link between
Griffyndor and bravery in the later books this makes me wonder if
there is something deeper that I'm missing. Of course I'm probably
just getting carried away with it all.
