The main problem I have with the Snape & Florence theory is that Bertha is
two years older than Snape, so the kissing that she witnessed would, at
the latest, be when Snape was a 5th year (or roughly the time period we
see in the pensieve). Harry, however, comments that Bertha looks to be
about 16, which would make Snape even younger - about 14 - when the
Florence incident occured. Not impossible, kids have certainly been
fooling around at that age before, but Snape as seen in the pensieve
doesn't appear to be the type of boy who'd have girls flocking around him.
I'd accept Sirius Black in that role easier, and he could possibly have
hexed Bertha, but I still think it was an older student that Bertha had a
crush on herself and that's why she was following him around and spying on
him. That's why I lean towards Lucius Malfoy as being the one with
Florence, and he definitely would have hexed a spy - especially if his
marriage to Narcissa was already lined up. At the time Bertha was a Fifth
year (15-16), Lucius Malfoy would have been in his last year at Hogwarts.
