Subject: Snape: The fact that he exists
Pooh wrote:
Having spent alot of time searching the messages one
possibility I
haven't managed to find anyone else raising is that
Snape is or is
perceived to be gay. James may have a prejudice,
heightened by his denial that
one of his friends is gay. I know that the subject of
Sirius being gay
has been raised but it is Lupin who neither
acknowledges, condones or
prevents the bullying. He tries to distance himself.
I believe that this is because he knows that he has a
parallel with
Snape is some way. It is either the vampire/werewolf
thing or that they
are both gay.
I'd love to hear if this has occured to anyone else.
now laxer:
Do you have any cannon to support your thought that
any one in the
series is gay? "the subject of Sirius being gay has
been raised" do you
know how hard it is is to find a girlfriend when you
are in Azkaban?
And besides, how many couples have we actually seen in
the series? I can
count 5. Percy's, Ginny's 2, cho and michael, and
Krum/hermiony.
besides, we cant even tell if Sirius had a girlfriend
at hogwarts cause we
have only seen it once. Perhaps he was the ultimate
ladies man. And
for the possibility of Snape being perceived as gay,
what evidence do
you have for that. JKR up to this point has wisely
avoided most
sexuality, so why would she portray him as gay?
*******************************************************
I think that sexual orientation of characters is
unimportant to the plot of the story, personally,
however, in response to the Sirius/Snape/Lupin "gay"
thing:
Firstly, I agree with Laxer about Snape--most girls,
no matter how we look past outward appearance, find it
difficult to ignore it completely, and it is also
difficult to have feelings for someone who is so
prejudice against non-pure bloods and being so "into"
the dark arts, so it was probably difficult for Snape
to find himself a girlfriend (unless of course he
really did grow up to look like Alan Rickman--as is
evident by so many postings about him--but by the
description in the book, I just don't see that really
happening)--on the other hand, too, like it was
mentioned in an earlier post, we don't know all of the
Hogwarts teachers who are attached, for all we know he
*could* have a wife/girlfriend--whatever.
Next, as to Sirius, in the pensieve scene in OoP,
Harry sees a girl basicall "checking out" Sirius
wishing he would notice, how could someone who was soo
"handsome" and had the attention of so many girls,
especially being the best friend to James (definately
a "ladies man") not have had a girlfriend? He
probably didn't get married after Hogwarts as James
and Lily did because he seems just the type of guy who
avoids commitment unless absolutely necessary (in a
romantic relationship that is), but again, another
good point by Laxer, it *is* hard to find a girlfriend
in Azkaban.
Lastly, Lupin, I am sure he was still hesitant to get
into too many close relationships/friendships in
school, he was always afraid his being a warewolf
would effect people too much--if he had a girlfriend
or wife he would have to tell her what he is, and she
may not understand as well as his guy friends--as a
matter of fact, it is mentioned he was surprised he
had any friends at all.
