characters that some people may describe as flirtatious or brooding,
but is the same type of closeness I witness amongst my own circle of
friends and which is indicative of sympathy/empathy and
close 'fraternal' feelings regardless of age, gender or sexual
orientation. Perhaps we are just conditioned to believe a close non-
familial bond probably has a sex base?

Yeah, it's strange how nowadays, if two people of any gender are
friends, everyone jumps to conclusions about them dating, whether
it's a homosexual or heterosexual relationship. In fact, same thing
if two characters are enemies. I agree with the above post; any
relationships relavent to the plot will be revealed, while all others
are hidden. For the record, I believe Sirius and Lupin were friends,
nothing more. And, while JKR does take on some heavy topics like
death and racism, I don't see her tackling gay relationships any time
soon. Nor do I see her pairing up two heterosexual couples unless
there's a reason. So some of your favourite ships, no matter what
characters are involved, may never be seen in the books.
As I've said before, that's what fan fiction is for, I guess.
