This is entirely possible. She also might well have been looking for 
dirt on whoever Lily was bringing home, trying to convince her 
parents to get Lily out of that "freak" school. 

If we assume, and I somehow feel good about assuming this, that 
Petunia and Lily were close at one point, it opens up interesting 
possibilities.

The rats/Pettigrew thing? Well, not sure, but it definitely shows 
that Lily had several "horrible boys" to choose from.
