Or, she lied.  Just as she lied to Vernon about the reason for needing to keep Harry.  (She said it was because the neighbors would ask questions.)  The reason for keeping Harry is because DD told her he is protected from V. only at her (Petunia's) home.  So, Petunia may likely have lied about how she knew about dementors/Azkaban!  She told a lie which would sound more acceptable to Vernon - just as the neighbors lie sounded more acceptable.  "That awful boy said something." Yeah. That's the ticket.   She couldn't say, "Vernon, we have to keep him here because it is only by the blood of someone related to Lily can he stay alive and we're bound by magical contract which Dumbledore set out 15 years ago to abide by it."  She couldn't say, "I know about dementors because I used to live in the Wizarding World and everyone knows about them."  or "I used to be married to a Wizard man." or some other such thing. (Just hazarding some guesses on those, LOL.)

I think she lied.
