Wow. I've only been following this tread a little bit, but it's
interesting to see everyone's different take on Snape. Personally,
I think with Snape, what we see is what we get. A vindictive man
who can be petty and hold a grudge like no one else I've ever seen,
but does have a basic concept of good and wrong, ie, protecting
Harry during is quiditch match from Quirrel, while all time still
hating Harry's guts. Snape can make life miserable for his
students, especially the ones he doesn't like, but he would never
cause anyone any bodily harm. In fact, I believe Snape thought he
was saving Ron, Harry and Hermione from Sirius. And although we
knew Sirius was innocent, Snape truly didn't believe it. I would be
very disapointed if Snape turned out to be the spy, because that
would be too obvious, and JKR is better than that, however, I'm not
expecting Harry or us to start liking him any better.
