It's just that line that made me think maybe it's all student rumour
and myth that Snape is so keen on the DADA job - unless he gave in
and missed a year, and then thought "You hired THAT?!" and started
applying again. Umbridge noted that Snape has applied every year
for the job since his appointment, though, so presumably it's a
matter of record. Maybe DD won't give him the job because it's
harder to find a replacement Potions teacher than a DADA teacher?

As for Lockhart's appointment... uh, I have a JKR quote which I just
have to find... "Dumbledore believes there are all sorts of lessons
in life; horrible teachers like Snape are one of them!"
livechat-barnesnoble.html) You may not learn DADA from Lockhart,
but you'd learn a lot about human nature!

Dumbledore may have had gut feelings about Sirius, but he had
absolutely no evidence, and no idea what really could have happened
until he found out about Pettigrew being an animagus.

I suppose... Dumbledore couldn't have known that the Potters
switched secret-keeper at the last minute, or he would have known
Sirius couldn't possibly have betrayed them because he wasn't the
secret-keeper - and he would have know that it must have been
Pettigrew. In which case, it's the Potter's bad, for misjudging who
they could trust. Lacking just about all the knowledge in this
case, it's no wonder Dumbledore couldn't act.
