Well he did help found Hogwarts didn't he? So maybe the various 
headmasters and headmistresses put up with them because of the fact 
that he was part of the hogwarts four and also because Slytherin 
turned out a few headmasters like Phineas.

What about Phineas? Despite being dead and a portrait he was okay and 
did show concern for Sirius and everything.

Didn't Riddle himself say that Slytherin left it there so that his 
heir could finish his noble work?
