Riddle did say that, but we don't really know if that is, in fact, 
the reason he left the basilisk (sp?) around or what his "noble 
work" was.  I wouldn't put much stock in what Tom Riddle says about 
Slytherin's intent...I think he MAY be slightly, shall we say, 
misguided, and MIGHT have a tendency to distort things to justify 
his actions...
