Excellent point about telephones...

Actually, there are elements of both telephone networks as well as
the 
Underground, since not only can they just communicate fire to fire 
remaining where they are, but also travel physically through the Floo 
Network...what comes to mind for me is how the large modern fiber 
networks (at least in the US) have often been installed along train 
tracks since then the fiber can piggyback on the already-established 
physical network of train tracks...now I'm sure JKR probably didn't 
really have that detail in mind, but it seems to work well enough as 
an analogy...apologies if my Internet infrastructure background is 
leaking too much into HP! :)

This is my first post...I've heard about HPfGU for awhile, but I 
finally gave in and joined...glad I did! Wish I could go to
Nimbus2003 
this weekend, but c'est la vie...
