They tried twice. They tried to tell McGonagall once pg 194-195 and
she told them to butt out and then they ran into her again, pg 196
and she threatened to take 50 points at a time away until they
dropped it.
But, she didn't know, and refused to listen to the fact that Hagrid
had given up the secret of Fluffy, which removes one obstacle; or
that Quirrell and Snape had been having strange conversations, which
turns out, was misinterpreted by the kids, but whatever Snape was
doing, it didn't prevent Quirrell from going after the thing; or that
the centaurs, who D-Dore trusts, even if McGonagall doesn't, were
terrified of something happening, and that, given all this evidence,
perhaps D-Dore should be contacted. He would have come back, most
likely.
And then, considering that there is the strong indication that D-Dore
set this up from the beginning, for Harry to go down there, I have a
hard time believing D-Dore would have endangered the Stone just to
put Harry through his paces.
Again, I think the notion of this mirror being perfectly safe from
Quirrellmort is wrong, because that assumes V-Mort, the smartest
student ever at Hogwarts, wouldn't have figured it out and figured
out a way around it.
If it was truly all that, why bother with the other obstacles?
Have Quirrell simply wish to get the stone. Or, go back up, drag a
student down, and have that student wish for it. I'm sure others can
think of other ways.
I mean, the smartest student at Hogwarts surely wouldn't have taken
very long to realize the Erised is Desire spelled backwards, and gone
from there.
But... since Q-Mort literally couldn't touch Harry, and presumably,
any offensive spells AGAINST Harry would have rebounded quite neatly,
I'd say that was as safe a spot as any.

-- Of course, the smartest student at Hogwarts didn't think to tell
Quirrell to "Accio Stone," either...
