I think you and I have different versions of the book..they talk to
McGonagall on pages 267-269 in my version, but that is neither here
nor there...I read that they only try to go to her once and she
tells them that it is protected. The next time they interact is
when she catches them near Fluffy's door, when she tells them that
50 points will be taken away if she catches them (Harry and Ron)
near Fluffy's door (for lack of a better description) again..I would
have taken 50 points away the minute I caught them there..EACH :)

They never try to tell her all of this (i.e. Snape and Quirrell,
Hagrid telling them how to get past fluffy). I stand by what I said
in that they should have presented their case, not just say someone
is trying to steal it.

No discussion...I really don't know what D-Dore was thinking..

I don't think the mirror was the main defense of the stone...I think
it was D-Dore's spell that "only the person who wanted to find the
stone and not use it would be able to get it" which was the major
defense. Quirrell couldn't get it because he wanted to use it, nor
could a student wish for it because the student probably, by the
time Quirellmort dragged them down there, didn't WANT to find the
stone. Apparently Harry, Ron, or Hermione were the only ones who
could have possibly gotten the stone, so if they would not have
been "so damn hard-headed" (as my beloved grandfather was so fond of
describing me as), then the stone would have been safe. McGonagall
told them, but did they listen? Noooooo....:)

I don't think he would have gotten it even if he had said it.
