I think the reason is in the phrasing of the prophecy.."one will die 
at the hand of the other" When V-mort returns in GoF, he gives 
Pettigrew a new hand and it has been discussed as being "the hand of 
the other"

BINGO! You have just given me insight into why I feel exactly the 
opposite about OoP (don't get me wrong, I still like it)...I thought 
Empire Strikes Back was the weakest of the trilogy, though not 
horrible by any stretch of the imagination...exactly how I feel 
about OoP
