My turn:
Don't forget the other things that they learn in DADA though:
boggarts, warewolves and the other stuff Lupin teaches them in third
year, and the "lessons" on creatures Lockart tries to teach them
don't all deal with curses jinxes and spells. Its a shame that beyond
the unforgivable curses we don't find out what "Moody" teaches them.
It would be interesting to know how much knowledge Crouch/Moody
actully passed on. Spell work seems to be of more benefit, but maybe
that's because the focus is on Voldemort and the DE's in the book.
Plus spells that are quick and simple to say are probably of great
benefit in a battle.

My turn again:
Someone else also mentioned that Harry has been able to do magic
without a wand before coming to Hogwarts and cited the snake at the
zoo as an example. We've seen many other incidences of magic without
a wand: ending up on the kitchen roof, blowing up aunt Marge etc.
Hagrid tells him in book one that he is capable of doing magic when
upset. Is this the same as the wand in the dementors scene in OoP-
because he began the scene so angry with Dudley is that their some
residual anger, plus his fear of the Dementors that makes it possible
for him to Accio his wand to his hand? Just an idea....
