The sad part here is, the other Houses help breed this opinion as
much as any. They certainly don't look at newly sorted 1rst year
Slytherin's with any sort of kindness or respect. In (PoA?) Harry
watched the sorting of one Slytherin boy and wondered if the boy knew
his house had turned out alot of evil Wizards. This is the only
sympathy towards a Slytherin that I have seen. (other than Teen-
Snape being defended by Lily Evans)

And one good point. Its not said that ALL Slytherin turn out evil,
just some. The other Houses show Slytherin hostility simply from that
fact, and from the few other Slytherins they know in previous years
who act that way. We only see Malfoy, Pansy Crabbe and Goyle. Are the
others laughing and following out of fear of not supporting them?
Imagine, and then to top it off, having the other Houses hating you
from the moment you take off the sorting hat.

No WONDER Slytherins can be so nasty! Imagine, coming out from under
the sorting hat, hearing the name of your House shouted into the din,
only to see 3/4's of the students assembled glare or sneer at you.
What did you do wrong? Why do they hate you? If it were me, I'd
certainly feel angry and betrayed, maybe spiteful. It wouldn't be
pleasant. And yet any Gryffindor who is sorted is appluaded loudly by
all but Slytherin.

Immediately, the House rivalry is set into the person's mind. They
have no choice, no going back, this is it, this is the way it is. Its
either fight or be stepped on, in their own House and against other
Houses.

Which is really sad. If Gryff or the other Houses tried heeding the
Sorting Hat and Dumbledors advice and shown kindness, to the lower
years at least, the rivalry and Hostility would at least tone down.

Thats my two cents anyways.
