I couldn't find any reference to his using a shield charm, rather I 
think that we see Sirius ducking spells, and knocking DEs aside, 
in a couple of places.  Certainly Sirius had a wand, and JKR 
says that he dueled with Bellatrix (and others?), and that their 
wands moved like a blur, but she omits mention of any spells 
that he may have used.  Maybe that means nothing, but many of 
the spells of the DA are named, some by the DE, and some of 
those by the Order, and none by Sirius.  It just struck me as odd.

Finchen noted in another post that Sirius did use his wand to 
summon up butterbeers (accio butterbeer) for the Weasleys and 
Harry when they came to Grimmauld Place after Mr Weasley's 
attack.  Good call on that!  I had forgotten that.
