I have read many mails on this subject but have never seen my candidate proposed previously.
I believe Harry's Godmother to be Alice Longbottom, Nevil's Mum. 
The Potters and the Longbottoms were in the first OotP together and they all seem to be the same age so it is quite possible that Lilly and Alice were friends at school, possibly in the same year.
 
This is my first post so please be gentle with me.
