Me:
I always thought Hagrid had good authority to make both
determinations. There was no reason for Hagrid not to know that
Riddle and Voldemort were one and the same. I'm sure AD would have
told him. Especially since it seemed that he was working for the
order the first time around. Hagrid might have even had some insight
into his former classmate. James played quidditch for his house and
then shortly after finishing school(even if it was a few years),
joined the order. It wasn't so long a time span that Hagrid wouldn't
have thought to himself, "Gee, that's the kid who played chaser for
(insert house name)". After James and Lily were killed I'm sure it
was cemented in his mind the way one tends to remember things about
people who are gone so clearly.
