I thought that Snape asked Lupin if Harry got the map *directly from
the manufacturers* and in this Lupin was right to deny it. Harry got
it from F&G, of course. Lupin did lie about knowing what it was, and
I think Lupin also sees a little too much James in Harry, like Sirius
did, and he reacted to Harry like he would have to James, as a
follower, as a friend, and an enabler.
I see Lupin as one of the characters who is indeed the greyest, right
in the middle between Black (no pun intended, but struggles against
his inborn evil nature, trying to be on the side of the angels) and
White (Albus, who loves Harry too much and does evil by not doing the
harder, right thing, a sin of omission.) I love that there's so much
complexity and ambiguity in the characters. After all, the world is
not divided into good people and Death Eaters.

I almost liken this to a person with AIDS, forgetting a condom just
once. It puts the life of the other person in jeapordy, and
schizophrenia isn't transmissible.
I do see him as a beta-werewolf, a follower.
