I didn't loathe Sirius, but I sure as heck didn't trust him. He was
loyal to Harry, which Harry needed, but I wouldn't have trusted him
to do the right thing for anyone else. Remember, this is the man who
broke Ron's leg in order to get to Pettigrew. He's not exactly safe
to be around -- what if he decides he needs to hurt you for
the 'greater good'?

And I never quite forgave Sirius for his cold-blooded declaration
that "Snape deserved [the Prank]". The geeky oddball you knew in
high school *deserved* to be eaten by the ravenous monster because he
annoyed you? Not only did Sirius attempt murder, or at least
manslaughter, he betrayed Remus as well; if Snape had died, Remus
would have been facing the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous
Creatures, and there is *no* indication that Sirius ever understood
that.

So do I. Even as an adult, Remus falls in with whatever his more
forceful companions are doing -- he agrees to kill Peter Pettigrew
almost immediately in PoA, he joins back up with the Order at
Dumbledore's request, etc. He comes across as a follower, and not one
out of loyalty, but because he doesn't have the courage to stand up
for his own ideals, unlike Neville of all people.

I always wonder about people who write Remus as an 'alpha werewolf'.
He doesn't have alpha wolf characteristics. He hasn't got the
confidence to stand up to others, and wants to be liked too much.
