Yeah, that made me start doubting too-- pre-OoP, I was convinced he
was going back to spy, simply because I couldn't think of anything
else as interesting. Working on potions doesn't sound Snapey enough--
he seems to enjoy running around and doing things, and spying just
suits his character right down to the ground.

But there's a few things in OoP that really make me hesitate:

-- the above exchange, which to my ear really sounds like Snape is
thinking, "Ha! Wrong again!"

-- the fact that Snape is going in and giving exciting reports to
meetings of the entire Order. Isn't that kind of a gaping security
risk? Are they completely certain they don't have a mole in the Order
itself? The double-agent facade makes sense except that his reports
seems to consist of more than, "sorry, couln't get you anything, maybe
next week", while giving the real dirt directly to Dumbledore.

-- also, I really missed a Scar-O-Vision view of Snape in Voldmort's
presence. Maybe he was just never there... otherwise it just seems
like such an obvious detail to put in.

-- plus, the possibility of ANOTHER spy: Avery. Is he really just a
collosal f***-up? Or is he a saboteur? OR... dun dun dun: is Avery
Snape? Barty Crouch Jr. has been suggested as a polyjuice canditate
for Snape's cover, but perhaps it's the reformed but cowardly Avery
who generously offered himself as a 'double'. Snape could assume
Avery's role in meetings, while Avery curls up somewhere in protective
custody.

If he's NOT spying though, I can't imagine what else involves him
still keeping in good with Lucius Malfoy and giving 'reports'.

Sydney-- hoping desperately it's not some vampire thing.
