Oh that's a good one.  I really think the polyjuice potion to become 
Avery or someone else could be something.  I've wondered about the 
Malfoy's trust too.  Maybe Snape works on many different levels?  
Could be double agent sort of thing?  Ultimately being on 
Dumbledore's side of course.  I can't think what else he could be 
giving reports on either, other than spying activities that is.
