I don't think so.  I don't think it "mock threatening" or getting 
knocked out of the way that made Snape cry.  I think it was 
sustained torment.  I think the picked on him big time before he 
cried, then assigned the "nick name."  I don't think it was over a 
little thing.  I just don't think James and Co. cared.  It was 
something they could make fun of him for.

And yes, I think we all find the name "Snivellus" offensive.  We're 
meant too.
