I was surprised to hear DD extol Snape's abilities as an Occlumens
(sp?) because Snape, IMHO, does allow his emotions to control him all
the time. I thought he was refering to himself when he talked about
the Dark Lord snapping emotional people in halves, perhaps from
experience. He's so emotional, sometimes I think he's not British,
perhaps a bloody American git. (No flames, please. I'm a Yank. Just
being funny-ish.)
A few examples:
PoA, US TPB, p419-20: Snape throws a hissy fit.
(Sirius escaped on Buckbeak w help from HP,HG and the Time Turner)
"HE DIDN'T DISAPPARATE!" Snape roared, ... Fudge appeared angry. But
Snape was beside himself.
"Professor Snape!" shrieked Madam Pompfroy. "Control yourself!"
"See here, Snape, be reasonable," said Fudge....
"THEY HELPED HIM ESCAPE, I KNOW IT!" Snape howled, pointing at Harry
and Hermione. His face was twisted; spit was flying from his mouth.
"Calm down, man!" Fudge barked. "You're talking nonsense!"
...Snape stood there, seething, staring at Fudge, who looked
thoroughly shocked at his behavior, to DD.... Snape whirled about,
robes swishing behind him, and stormed out of the ward.
"Fellow seems quite unbalanced," said Fudge, staring after him. "I'd
watch out for him if I were you, Dumbledore."
SS, US TPB, p126: Snape's expression of hate when he sees HP across
the room.
(The first time HP sees Snape)
The hook-nosed teacher [Snape] looked past Quirrel's turban straight
into Harry's eyes --- and a sharp, hot pain shot across the scar on
Harry's forehead. ...Harder to shake off was the feeling Harry had
gotten from the teacher's look --- a feeling that he didn't like
Harry at all.
(Note: Also an interesting juxtaposition of LV under the turban and
Snape, and the pain in the scar. Perhaps the first example of the
divided essence, using his old DE Snape as a conduit?)
OotP, US HB, Ch 24, Occlumency, p537: Snape is nuts the whole time,
just as nuts as the 15-yr-old, puberty-addled HP:
"*I have told you not to say the Dark Lord's name!*"
They glared at each other. Harry's scar seared again, but he did not
care. Snape looked agitated. When he spoke again he sounded as though
he was trying to appear cool and unconcerned.
OotP, US HB, Ch 28, Snape's Worst Memory, p649-650:Snape goes postal
after wallowing in sad memories.
It was scary: Snape's lips were shaking, his face was white, his
teeth were bared. ...[S]haking Harry so hard that his glasses slipped
down his nose.
"I --- didn't ---"
Snape threw Harry from him with all his might. Harry fell hard on the
dungeon floor.
Actual assault, there.
OotP, US HB, p521: Snape is provoked into a duel.
...Sirius and Snape looking toward the door with their wands pointing
into each other's faces and Harry immobile between them, a hand
stretched out to each of them, trying to force them apart.
What's more, his statement about wallowing in bad memories, his
reaction to HP in the Penseive, and the near-duel entirely correlate
to his dire prediction/memory. It sounds like Snape still loves LV in
a man way (see the Snape-is-gay thread.) Maybe DD trusts Snape
because Snape *wants* to go back to LV but *can't.* If he *can't*,
you know he's no threat. Maybe Snape's worst memory is that he's too
weak to go back to LV.
