Hermione typifies the kind of person who goes to another country
(the WW) and promptly comes up with better ideas of how it should be
run, what is wrong with their culture and customs and so on.
Me -
Exactly. Over on the politics thread I described her attitude as that of
19th Century missionaries off to 'civilize' Native Americans or African
tribes or whichever culture they happened to be directing their efforts at.
Her heart is in the right place and I admire her determination to stand up
for what she believes but she's being terribly arrogant and short-sighted.
Plus even if I did agree with her eventual aim which I won't until we learn
more about the House Elves and their desires, she's trying to do too much
too soon. If she would just direct her efforts towards improving the
*treatment* of house elves rather than trying to free them it would not only
be more likely to succeed but might help in opening the eyes of the WW to
the fact that House Elves are sentient beings who should have the same
rights that all beings do. Currently I think they tend to see them as a
combination of a well trained pet and an animated household appliance.
She reminds me of certain human rights activists (especially international
law students) who worry about women's rights and stuff in poor countries
when frankly the people there need food, water, shelter etc first before
they even *care* about whether they can vote.
