Dan,
First, thanks for looking for contradictions. I am in the process of
doing that myself.
Second, I think your reading of that scene is not entirely correct.
Hedwig's cage bursts open as the car falls out of the Whomping Willow
and Hedwig "rose out of it with an angry screech and sped off toward
the castle without a backward look" (CoS, p. 75-76).
Ron and Harry collect their trunks and then head up the hill to the
Hogwarts. Upon reaching the building, Ron and Harry peer through a
window and see the sorting taking place. At that time, they notice
that Dumbledore is seated at the head table.
So, Dumbledore could still be Hedwig, in fact, this scene perfectly
allows for it to be so. (i.e., Hedwig to the castle. Ron and Harry
arrive at the castle and see that Dumbledore is there.)
Indeed, if Dumbledore is Hedwig it would also explain why he
is "unusually grave" upon being called to Snape's office after Snape
catches Harry and Ron.
It would also explain why he "asked no questions about the car"
(i.e., because he was in the car).
It would also explain why McGonagall says coldly to Harry (shortly
before Dumbledore arrives)
"Why didn't you send us letter by owl? I believe you have an owl?"
[NOTE: JKR has McGonagall stress the word "you" in this statement]
Once again, this doesn't prove that Hedwig is Dumbledore. But it
leaves open the possibility.
Thanks
Jake
