Petunia seems very bitter towards her parents, for favouring Lily
over her - a witch in the family, how wonderful etc. Maybe they're
not dead, but they quarrelled and now they don't speak. Although
this would beg the question; Why didn't Dumbledore leave Harry with
his grandparents instead of the Dursleys? He can't have thought the
Dursleys were preferable if he had any real choice in the matter.
But if Petunia and her parents did have a big bust up before they
died, it might explain why she never speaks of them. There seems to
be no shortage of Unspeakable Things in casa Dursley. Dudley is not
exactly a boy with an enquiring mind, so maybe it never occurred to
him to ask - or if he asked, he was hushed up so abruptly he never
tried again.
