I think what was revealed about Lily is that she stands up for the 
oppressed, because it is right rather than because of personal 
loyalty or affect.  She stood up for Snape because they were picking 
on him in the pensieve memory, not because he was her special 
friend.  Rowling said, if my memory is correct, that this revelation 
about Lily influences what Harry does in Book 7, along with another 
revelation about her character later in the series.  I think this 
incident foreshadows Harry standing up for oppressed peoples such as 
house elves, muggles, giants, etc.  because they are oppressed, and 
seeking their liberation.
