Back to the convertible analogy (not so much an analogy as an example,
really) - you do feel some wind in your hair, but not the full 70mph or
whatever... that's not until you stick your hand up above the
windshield or out a window. There's still no real reason the magic
couldn't be to reduce the effect of the wind... perhaps the thestral
was going even faster than it usually does, which would strain the
limits of the magic.
