You're right it was unspecified.  We (my family and I) did go back and look and through the MOM chapters in search of that red jet of light...  *everytime* someone cast Stupify! JKR specifically says a red jet of light shoots out of their wands. It was mentioned over and over and over. (We didn't notice the frequency upon our first reading, I'll admit!)  So, I suspect she did that to help alleviate our obsessing over what might have killed Sirius.  

Interestingly, the purple jet which hit Hermione seemed to be un-named, tho, and none of us can remember a purple jet of light from previous books - anyone??  

I agree with you about the archway - I'm sure we'll see it again in greater depth - but apparently, it is indeed The End... Death.
