I couldn't find the reference but I am sure that somewhere in the book
that room is referred to as the 'Room of Death' or the 'Chamber of
Death'. I really don't think a ancient veiled arch standing on a
platform in the middle of the Room of Death is just a convinient place
to go powder your nose. The Room of Death IS the Room of Death because
it contain the archway to death.

I'm totally convinced that falling through that veil means falling
into death, and that is why Lupin knew immediately that Sirius was
really and truly dead.

The curse that hit him was unspecified, and intentionally I think,
just to drive people like us nuts as we obsess over the possibilities.
But without a doubt when you go into the Room of Death and walk
through the Arch, you are walking to your death.

Just a thought.
