OoP spoilers - Why I hate the prefect selection etc.

I am not sure how I feel about Ron being a leader or a follower.  I 
do agree that Dumbledore may be trying to pull more out of Ron.  I 
think he was chosen for the same reason Hermione was.  It had little 
to do with grades or popularity and had more to do with their support 
of Harry.  Harry needs all the support he can get and having his two 
best friends as prefects helps.  They could probably bend some rules 
a little easier, have some extra knowledge to make Harry's life 
easier.  Etc upon those lines.
I too am new here, but has anyone discussed why Malfoy was made a 
prefect?????
