Lady Macbeth:
I had meant to mention this earlier when this topic came up and forgot.  I
don't draw the connection between the "half-moon" spectacles and the owls
because I don't think that was the intention.  Half-moon spectacles are the
precursor to bifocals - if Dumbledore got them when he was young-ish, they
would have been the only kind of eyeglasses available for him, so that he
had the bifocal aspect.  Also, I have seen them around even yet today,
though it is much more rare.

This would also be why mention is made of him looking over the tops of his
glasses at people.  If he needs the bifocals for close work or reading, then
he may see people better NOT looking through the lenses.
