Not a bad theory.  :)  One problem with them 
going easy b/c Malfoy was leading them:  Malfoy says, 
"don't forget, be gentle with Potter until we've got the 
prophecy, you can kill the others if necessary."  I DO think you're 
right that they would be hesitant to kill pureblood children- it's 
probably no coincidence that one of them is ready to use Avada 
Kedavra on HERMIONE but not on the other kids.
