Just a small note: I don't think JKR imagined for a moment that writing
a book about a magical boy in a magical school she was opening an
'occult can of worms'. She was using something that has a long
tradition in literature. I should think the daft attitude of the
conservative Christian right (almost exclusively American) came as a
surprise to her - though I entirely support her response.

Yes. When she gave her interview with Jeremy Paxman just before the book I
rather thought she was implying that it was all a storm in a teacup and had
never occured to her that people would get so worked up over a kids' story.
When JP told her that it was longer than the New Testement she joked that
that would no doubt give these people something else to complain at er about
