I was thinking about an angle on the prophecy that has been left
unexplored (at least as far as I know and apoligize if others have
already posted this) that could give some proof to the argument that
the prophecy pertains to Neville instead of Harry.

Many (Dumbledore included) have concluded that Harry is the chosen
one becuase of the scar on his head (which defeated Voldemort
initially) and thus Voldemort CHOSE Harry as his equal.

The Phrophecy (again) for those who don't want to have to check the
book to make sure my reasoning follows the text:

`The one with the power to vanquish th'e- Dark Lord approaches
 born
to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies

and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will havc
power the Dark Lord knows not
and either must die at the hand of
the other for neither can live while the other survives
 the one
with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh
month dies"

I submit that Voldemort's mistake/Harry's scar doesn't necessarily
mean that the choice has been made YET!

When looking at the prophecy, it is important to note this line: 'and
the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will havc
power the Dark Lord knows not'

Now, this does not say WHEN the dark lord would mark him as an equal.
It does not say that the curse/scar he laid on Harry WAS the mark
fortold. Neville could VERY well be marked LATER by voldemort (maybe
intentionally).

Harry states that: "`Then - it might not be me?"

Dumbledore (operating on the assumption that Harry's scar is the mark
that makes him an equal) tells him:
'He heard only the beginning, the part foretelling the birth of a boy
in July to parents who had thrice defied Voldemort. Consequently, he
could not warn his master that to attack you would be to risk
transferring power to you, and marking you as his equal. So Voldemort
never knew that there might be danger in attacking you, that it might
be wise to wait, to learn more. He did not know that you would have
power the Dark Lord knows not"

Now, my theroy would suggest that Voldemort DID seek to kill both
children but went to the Potters first to kill their child (as the
Longbottom's secret keeper was not available yet). It is VERY MUCH
possible that a great witch (and unspeakable) like Lilly Potter DID
find a way to stop (deflect) the Avada Kadarva yet that has NOTHING
to do with the phrophecy. Afterall, Voldemort is back! Harry did NOT
finish Voldemort off!

It is ENTIRELY possible that the "marking" has not yet happened. It
is possible that now that Harry knows the truth, that Voldemort has
access to that knowledge now and could theoretically CHOOSE Neville
(seeing him as a weaker lame duck than Harry) in order to vanquish
the foe from the prophecy.

Dumbledore goes on to reason: 'He saw himself in you before he had
ever seen you, and in marking you with that scar, he did not kill
you, as he intended, but gave you powers, and a future, which have
fitted you to escape him not once, but four times so far - something
that neither your parents, nor Neville's parents, ever achieved.'

But escaping him 4 times isn't part of the prophecy yet AD uses it as
rationale to prove his point that Harry is the one. Yet the Prophecy
doesn't say anything about escaping him 4 times (or more than his
parents). In fact, the prophecy seems to mention that he will have
the power to vanquish the other. Yet voldemort hasn't had the power
to vanquish Harry and Harry hasn't YET been able to vanquish
Voldemort. So what gives?

Voldemort has NEVER tried to vanquish Neville, Neville has never
tried to vanquish Voldemort. All we know, is that Voldemort (not yet
anyways) hasn't marked Neville as his equal. Or maybe, just maybe...
By giving Harry the scar, He marked Neville as the chosen one
indirectly. Maybe Harry's scar is JUST THAT, a Scar.

Dumbldore goes on to rationalize Voldemort's choice to attack Harry
as an infant with the following: 'Voldemort never knew that there
might be danger in attacking you, that it might be wise to wait, to
learn more. He did not know that you would have power the Dark Lord
knows not'

In essence, the prophecy and the scar don't provide answers, only
MORE possibilities and MORE questions. It is entirely possible that
Harry DOESN'T have to kill or be killed. It is entirely that Harry
hasn't made the choices he has or survived off of a prophecy or a
scripted outcome... but rather off sheer nerve and heart. THAT would
reinforce the thinking of choices made rather than destiny that
Rowling seems to stress.

And the thoughts that maybe NEITHER can survive while the other lives
gives us the reality that Harry WILL live... But Neville and
Voldemort (true to the prophecy) will not as Neville sacrifices
himself in the interest of vanquishing Voldemort.
